My dad's 55 behind me

MAKE MINE A 1946!

Welcome! My name is Ray; this is my page dedicated to my first vehicle, a 1946 Chevy 1/2 ton pickup. My dad, Ray Sr., found the truck for me. He owned a Standard service station back in the late 1960s and into the 1980s. It was there that he heard of this truck. It was located about 25 miles from where we lived. At the time, I was 14; not old enough to drive by myself, but old enough to work and make my own money, which is why I was able to buy this truck.

46 WHEN I FIRST GOT IT

This old truck, as you see it here, was purchased from a retired farmer northwest of Hanover, Kansas. I paid $75 for it and drove it home. It only needed gas and a battery. (Don't feel bad, that was 1976 and a lot of money for me.) Today the truck is priceless. Okay, it has a price, but only I would buy it for that. Would that make me richer or poorer, if I did?

Through the years it has gone through a lot of changes. I didn't drive it much the first year or two, due to my age. But my older sister liked to drive it; I couldn't blame her. After many trips up and down the main drag the old Babbitt rods just pounded all the louder, you know the sound. This is what started all the changes. Thanks Janet! No, I'm not mad any more.....than I was than. Just kidding. Janet has been there more times than not for me.

So, Dad and I replaced the motor with another straight 6 from, I think a 1950, thats the style my dad likes, lucky for me. That stayed in until I got the truck stuck, and broke the back housings on the transmission. That was the end of the enclosed drive shafts. Dad had a 1958 station wagon that the neighborhood kids and I tipped the body off to use the running gear for the truck. That wasn't very safe, now that I look back on it. Someone was watching out for us.

283 and grill

Now the truck would have a 283 with a powerglide transmission, and completely taken apart to begin its life as a hot-rod, a/k/a "Old Crate" by Officer O'Donnell.

This combination would stay together for several years, until someone asked if I had a Vette rear end. Come to find out the rear axle housing broke, making the tires lean. It must have been cracked when the wagon was in a derby, did I mention that yet?

So the truck sets for a while, I change jobs, and a guy from work offers me a 1973 Monte Carlo to use for the running gear. My wife, Donna, is happy now that it will be a little more modern.
